I Thought My Sister-in-Law Was Just Being Friendly
Fictional Pakistani adult romance and family drama
I never thought a few ordinary conversations could make me question my own assumptions. My name is Saad, and at the time this story happened, I was living with my parents in Islamabad. My older brother, Hamza, had been married to Maham for almost four years.
Why Her Kindness Stood Out
Maham was friendly with everyone in the family. She remembered birthdays, asked about everyone’s day, and never let a guest leave without having chai. Because of that, I never thought twice about the extra attention she sometimes gave me.
An Ordinary Family Dinner
It started during a family dinner at our house in G-11. The dining room was crowded, and everyone was talking at once.
Maham placed a plate in front of me.
“You haven’t eaten properly,” she said.
“I’ve had enough.”
“You always say that.”
I laughed. “How do you know?”
“Because I’ve been watching you avoid vegetables for four years.”
Everyone laughed. It was completely harmless.
A Conversation That Felt Personal
Later that night, when most guests had left, Maham and I talked in the kitchen while my brother was outside with our father. She asked about my work, and I told her about a difficult project.
She listened carefully. “You seem much more serious about your career than you used to be.”
I was surprised. “You noticed?”
“Of course.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Over the next few weeks, we had similar conversations. Sometimes she asked how work was going. Sometimes she recommended a restaurant or shared something interesting in the family WhatsApp group. I assumed it was simply her personality.
Questioning My Assumptions
Then one evening, my brother travelled to Lahore for work. Maham stayed at our house to help my mother prepare for a family event.
After dinner, we sat in the lounge discussing old family photographs. She pointed to a photograph of me from university.
“You looked completely different.”
“I was thinner.”
“No,” she said with a smile. “You just looked younger.”
I laughed. “That’s a polite way of saying I look old now.”
She shook her head. “That’s not what I meant.”
There was a brief silence. The conversation did not feel inappropriate, but it felt unusually personal. I changed the subject.
Creating Some Distance
A few days later, I wondered whether I had misunderstood everything. Maybe Maham was simply comfortable around me because we were family. Maybe I was reading too much into ordinary kindness.
That was when I decided to create some distance. I stopped lingering in the kitchen, kept conversations short, and avoided unnecessary messages.
Maham noticed. One afternoon, she asked, “Did I do something?”
“No.”
“Then why are you avoiding everyone?”
“I’m not.”
She looked at me for a moment. “Saad, you’re my husband’s younger brother. You’re family. If I’ve made you uncomfortable somehow, tell me.”
What I Learned
Her words immediately clarified what I had been thinking. There had never been a secret message behind her friendliness. She simply trusted me as a member of the family.
I felt embarrassed by my assumptions. “I think I was just overthinking things,” I admitted.
She smiled. “Then stop.”
That was the end of it.
Looking back, I learned something simple:
- Not every smile is flirting.
- Not every compliment carries a hidden meaning.
- Warmth should not automatically be mistaken for attraction.
- Respecting family boundaries means accepting kindness for what it is.
Maham remained the same friendly person she had always been, and I learned to stop confusing familiarity with attraction.
